VISUAL WORK
SPIRITUAL ART
"A glimmer of that feeling has shone so often in your eyes when—like the artists of every age—captivated by the hidden power of sounds and words, colours and shapes, you have admired the work of your inspiration, sensing in it some echo of the mystery of creation with which God, the sole creator of all things, has wished in some way to associate you."
--St. John Paul II, Letter to Artists, 1999
Gallery 1: Illuminated Manuscript, Sermon on The Mount (MT, 5)
2012
Materials: Watercolors, ink (black for writing, brass suspended for brass detailing), sharpie marker
![]() Sermon On The Mount, 1One each side of the script you will see a sun rise and a sunset, these represent the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. Each element of this piece has a strong scriptural and traditional connection, be it the hyssop, mountains, and lilies on the left, or the desert cave, wheat, wings and figs on the right. | ![]() Sermon On The Mount, 2To make this piece I used a dipping nip for writing and brass detailing. To give some perspective; this writing is about 1 page of the New American Bible. It took me about 30hrs alone to complete the writing, including the lining and spacing. Doing this project gave me a new appreciation and sense of gratitude for the many times and many pages of scripture that have been handwritten through the past millennia. |

Gallery 3: Meditation on the Face of Christ
2013
Materials: clay, foam, wire
![]() Meditation on the Face of ChristI chose to do this project as an artistic meditation on the face of Christ. I had been journeying through St. Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises. The contemplative parts of these exercises are somewhat visual. But, I've always had difficulty letting faces be present, in a sense. The reference I decided to use was a picture of a random guy off the internet for neck/head proportions then I tried to go with the flow from there. | ![]() Meditation on the Face of Christ |

I use leftover pieces of board with mistakes for "blotting" my brushes as I paint the final project. This is an example of one. I think they often end up looking remarkably interesting. I love how this turned out.
